Fridges and freezers are the hardest working appliances in the kitchen. They run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An inefficient applianace will consume more power and will be responsible for a higher amount of carbon dioxide.

Fridges and freezers are required by EU law to display an energy efficiency label to provide consumers with a simple efficiency comparision between products. The comparsion is based on a grading system with the most efficient appliances receiving A++ while the least efficient receive a G.

Since 1999 all fridges and freezers, with the exemption of chest freezers, sold in the EU must have an energy rating of C or above. Chest freezers, which are more efficient, must have an energy rating of a D or above.
